Was Najib told about Umno’s hudud motion?

Selangor Umno's motion on hudud has placed BN component parties in a fix, especially given that MCA and Gerakan have launched a vitriolic campaign against the Islamic criminal law.

According to Selangor opposition leader Mohd Shamsudin Lias, Umno tabled the motion to stop PAS and its DAP ally from politicising the hudud issue.

But a pro-Umno website had a different take on the matter.

In an article yesterday, MYKMU.net questioned if Selangor Umno had gone against the view of party president Najib Abdul Razak.

The website panned the motion as "unwise", adding that the push for hudud is a PAS' agenda and not Umno's.

"So the party which is supposed to table the hudud motion in the Selangor assembly is PAS. Why is Umno jumping the gun?" read the article.

The website also asked whether Najib was briefed on the motion or done at the whim and fancy of Selangor Umno.

"Was this motion discussed with other BN component parties in Selangor? I am sure it was not. So has the concept of consensus in BN thrown into the dustbin?" it added.

The article also observed that given this latest move, PAS appears to be more liberal than Umno.

"Is this the formula that Umno plans to use to recapture Selangor, where non-Muslims make up almost 50 percent of the voters," it read.

A rational move

Meanwhile, Shamsuddin, in an interview with Sin Chew Daily, defended the tabling of the hudud motion by Umno, adding that it was a rational move.

He said this was because Umno wanted to determine the state government's stand and the views of Muslim assembly representatives on the matter.

"Proposing the motion for a debate does not mean that we want to enforce the Islamic law on every Selangor citizen," he stressed.

"We just want to overcome the negative impression people have about hudud."

Shamsuddin commended assembly speaker Hannah Yeoh for being open-minded in allowing the motion to be debated.

The motion, which calls for a study on the feasibility of implementing hudud in Selangor, was submitted by Sungai Air Tawar BN assemblyperson Kamarol Zaki Abdul Malik last week.

BN has 12 state assemblypersons in Selangor, all of whom are from Umno, while Pakatan Rakyat has 44 (PKR, 14, PAS, 15 and DAP, 15).-Mkini
